DEEP PILATES FOR PREGNANCY
BEFORE, DURING, AFTER

DURING PREGNANCY
  • The abdominal muscles will stretch to more than twice their original length.
  • In the majority of all pregnancies, the rectus abdominus (superficial ‘6 pack’ muscle) splits creating a diastasis, or gap in the abdominal muscle.
  • The hormone relaxin is released to promote the flexibility of connective tissue, creating a laxity of muscles, ligaments, & joints to accomodate the rapid growth of the Baby & to prepare for birth.
  • The body’s center of gravity shifts, and the spine moves out of a neutral alignment.
  • These normal and functional changes minimize the Body’s integral support systems. This creates instability throughout the body which can lead to poor posture, aches & pains, compression of the lumbar spine, sciatica, & pelvic pressure.
  • It is essential for the deep core muscles (pelvic floor, transverse abdominus, multifidi, and internal obliques) to be toned and integrated in order to provide support for the lumbar spine, sacrum, & growing uterus.  The strength of these muscles not only support the body during pregnancy, but aid in birth, & recovery.
  • The pelvic floor muscles support proper placement and function of the pelvic organs.  This muscle set also facilitates deep abdominal strength.
  • The transversus abdominis & pelvic floor directly assists in the birth and their strength during pregnancy can help minimize excessive opening of the rectus abdominis.

DURING PILATES

  • We will focus on strengthening the deep core muscles, arms and mid-back with specifics on shoulder girdle stabilization, legs and butt for hip stability.
  • You will learn useful stretches to ease the tension of overworking muscles groups.
  • We will practice breathing as a way to connect to the body and calm the mind.
  • You will learn about proper alignment and posture as it relates to pregnancy, birth, and caring for your infant.
  • You will learn to open & release.
  • You will be comfortable.  The Pilates Method of Conditioning is incredibly adaptable to meet the changing needs of your body.
  • You will be safe.  All of the bodywork we do is consistent with the guidelines set forth by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
POSTPARTUM
  • We will treat your body with the respect & reverence it deserves after carrying and birthing your Baby.
  • We will focus on strengthening, toning, and reintegrating the deep core muscles for function and stability.
